Readings for each day of the week

Alcoholics Anonymous, pages 86 to 88; Step Eleven, morning

Friday

On awakening let us think about the twenty-four hours ahead. We consider our plans for the day. Before we begin, we ask God to direct our thinking, especially asking that it be divorced from self-pity, dishonest or self-seeking motives. Under these conditions we can employ our mental faculties with assurance, for after all God gave us brains to use. Our thought-life will be placed on a much higher plane when our thinking is cleared of wrong motives.

Saturday

In thinking about our day we may face indecision. We may not be able to determine which course to take. Here we ask God for inspiration, an intuitive thought or a decision. We relax and take it easy. We don’t struggle. We are often surprised how the right answers come after we have tried this for a while. What used to be the hunch or the occasional inspiration gradually becomes a working part of the mind. Being still inexperienced and having just made conscious contact with God, it is not probable that we are going to be inspired at all times. We might pay for this presumption in all sorts of absurd actions and ideas. Nevertheless, we find that our thinking will, as time passes, be more and more on the plane of inspiration. We come to rely upon it.

Sunday

We usually conclude the period of meditation with a prayer that we be shown all through the day what our next step is to be, that we be given whatever we need to take care of such problems. We ask especially for freedom from self-will, and are careful to make no request for ourselves only. We may ask for ourselves, however, if others will be helped. We are careful never to pray for our own selfish ends. Many of us have wasted a lot of time doing that and it doesn’t work. You can easily see why.

Monday

If circumstances warrant, we ask our wives or friends to join us in morning meditation. If we belong to a religious denomination which requires a definite morning devotion, we attend to that also. If not members of religious bodies, we sometimes select and memorize a few set prayers which emphasize the principles we have been discussing.

Tuesday

There are many helpful books also. Suggestions about these may be obtained from one’s priest, minister, or rabbi. Be quick to see where religious people are right. Make use of what they offer.

Wednesday

As we go through the day we pause, when agitated or doubtful, and ask for the right thought or action. We constantly remind ourselves we are no longer running the show, humbly saying to ourselves many times each day “Thy will be done.” We are then in much less danger of excitement, fear, anger, worry, self-pity, or foolish decisions.

Thursday

We become much more efficient. We do not tire so easily, for we are not burning up energy foolishly as we did when we were trying to arrange life to suit ourselves.

It works—it really does.

We alcoholics are undisciplined. So we let God discipline us in the simple way we have just outlined.

The royal road to progress in spiritual understanding is to solve definite problems by prayer.

Every time that you heal any condition, however small, by prayer, you gain an increase in spiritual understanding. One definite healing will teach you more about spiritual truth than hours of discussion or reading.

I greet The Indwelling Intender.
Today’s ‘Pay Forward’ gift is: Our Father’s Intention. ‘It is in our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light’ (Taylor Benson). I notice when I am into my dark side: I am on the defensive, looking for what is wrong in whomever or whatever. I found myself of late wandering around in the darkest night; an important time to turn to the Light and return to Love. I reach for the Light switch within using prayer, meditation, and affirmations. I’m focusing my attention on our Father’s intention. Spiritually, I’m active; turning to prayer, meditation, and contemplation often, with an expecting faith. I’m proactive in Alcoholics Anonymous, expecting more from the Programme, acting on what I am given. I expect more of myself, by giving of myself. Allowing others to be, whoever and however, our Father intends. I look for the good in everyone and everything, knowing our Father is Present within all. I am not wasting my life on the meaningless, worries, and nonsense. Our Father is directing me in a way I can currently hear, understand and follow. I am quick to accept and surrender whatever, to our Father. As soon the dark side shows up, I turn to the Divine Light. I am committed to staying focused on our Father’s intention during my wakeful hours and not doze off in the middle of my life. Like a Prodigal Son, I’ve returned Home to our Father, and I am a willing worker in His Fields. Thy Love, Thy Will be done.

‘In all of our affairs’

That one statement implies a lot. During personal inventory and prayer and meditation, I am awakened to the great reality that my Higher Power wants me to live in harmony with all who surround me. One of the big mistakes in the fellowship is the suggestion that it’s best to ‘stick with the winners’. That is too selective for someone like me and leads to a spirit of elitism (a trait I personally cannot afford). I need to maintain eye-to-eye-level connections with all around me, even those who I think I am opposed to.

My quest for personal peace does not mean I am to turn an indifferent eye to the troubles around me; on I the contrary, I am supposed to shed light upon wrong. It is how I go about this that makes the difference. When I pick and choose which spiritual principles to practise in my life, I am playing God. The good truly is the enemy of the best, here. I cannot play the good Samaritan for some and apathetically turn away from the least of my brothers or sisters.

One of the key concepts of A.A. in the 1940’s: Get the newcomer to Step Twelve as quickly as possible, so he or she can experience the life-changing spiritual awakening that occurs as the direct result of taking the Steps. Assure the newcomer that our programme of recovery will relieve his or her alcoholism. Show the newcomer that the process is simple and straightforward and that it really works.

Some people say they have a choice, today. I’m glad I don’t have a choice. If it’s up to me, one day I’ll choose to drink. No. I’ll take grace, contingent on the maintenance of my spiritual condition, thank you. ... Left to my own devices, I would drink, so I decided to put my drinking problem in the hands of another. –Thomas Yellowtail, CROW

Have you ever tried going through your day and carrying on a conversation with the Creator? Many of our Elders live in prayer. They talk to the Creator like the Creator is their best friend. It is easiest to do this if we pray in the morning and ask the Great Spirit to direct our thinking. When the Creator is involved in guiding our lives, we will have less stress, anxiety, and tension. Maybe this is something we would like to try today. ‘Oh, Creator, look at the Sun, how beautiful you have made it. Oh, look at this child, isn’t she just beautiful! Well, Creator, I’m not sure how I should do this task, what do you think? This person is starting to irritate me; I need your help to redirect my thinking. Thanks for returning me to a peaceful mind.’ Remember, the Creator also has a sense of humour.

Grandfather, Grandmother, let me walk in prayer.

Those “Don’t-come-any-closer-’cause-you-know-how-much-I-love-you” feelings,

Worldly affairs are all deceptive;
So I seek the truth Divine.
Excitements and distractions are illusions;
So I meditate on the non-dual Truth.
Companions and servants are deceptive;
So I remain in solitude.
Money and possessions are also deceptive;
So if I have them, I give them away.
Things in the outer world are all illusion;
The Inner Mind is that which I observe.
Wandering thoughts are all deceptive;
So I only tread the path of wisdom.
Deceptive are the teachings of expedient truth;
The final truth is that on which I meditate.
Books written in black ink are all misleading;
I only meditate on the pith-instructions of the whispered lineage.
Words and sayings, too, are but illusion;
At ease, I rest my mind in the effortless state.
Birth and death are both illusions;
I observe but the truth of no-arising.
The common mind is in every way misleading;
And so I practise how to animate awareness.
The Mind-holding Practice is misleading and deceptive;
And so I rest in the realm of reality.

I greet The Indwelling Keys To The Kingdom.

Today’s ‘Pay Forward’ gift is: Dismantling Our False Self. Saint Anthony of Egypt, the fourth-century father of Christian monasticism, provides a paradigm for dismantling the false self by means of both active confrontation and passive purification (prayer and meditation). ‘... exemplifies the positive way of dismantling the false self by practising unconditional love: selfishness cannot survive in the climate of continuous self-giving’. Confronting our false self likely feels like interior warfare, and, in fact, it is. Our defects centre within, not outside, where we can blame and ‘explain’ our problems. Faith and action (practising AA’s spiritual principles of prayer and meditation in all my affairs) work for me. If I didn’t know better I would think Saint Anthony plagiarised AA’s spiritual principles, for sure, Steps Eleven and Twelve.

‘The joy of living is the theme of AA’s Twelfth Step, and action is the key word. Here we turn outward toward our fellow alcoholics who are still in distress. Here we experience the kind of giving that asks no rewards. Here we begin to practise all Twelve Steps of the programme in our daily lives so that we and those about us may find emotional sobriety. When the Twelfth Step is seen in its full implication, it is really talking about the kind of love that has no price tag on it.’

A human being is capable of depression, otherwise there would be no capacity for exaltation. Depression is apt to turn us away from the ordinary commonplace things of God’s creation, but whenever God comes, the inspiration is to do the most natural simple things – the things we would never have imagined God was in, and as we do them we find He is there. The inspiration which comes to us in this way is an initiative against depression; we have to do the next thing and do it in the inspiration of God. If we do a thing in order to overcome depression, we deepen the depression; but if the Spirit of God makes us feel intuitively that we must do the thing, and we do it, the depression is gone. Immediately we arise and obey, we enter on a higher plane of life.

Elder’s Meditation of the Day

‘The basis of knowledge is fire, rock, water, and green. But when that power was given to man, he used it to twist his own mind. Tunkashila gave man just one drop of that wisdom.’

–Wallace Black Elk, LAKOTA

All of Nature has the wisdom to follow the Natural Laws. All of Nature knows how to live in harmony and use this wisdom in a good way, with exception of the human being. Often we misuse this wisdom. Wisdom always remains with those who use it in the proper way. Nature has used this wisdom well, so now we need to go to Her so we humans can relearn and change our lives. May we start doing this today, before it is too late.

Creator, let me be open to the lessons that Nature can teach me.

To understand selflessness, you need to understand that everything that exists is contained in two groups called the two truths: conventional and ultimate. The phenomena that we see and observe around us can go from good to bad, or bad to good, depending on various causes and conditions. Many phenomena cannot be said to be inherently good or bad; they are better or worse, tall or short, beautiful or ugly, only by comparison, not by way of their own nature. Their value is relative. From this you can see that there is a discrepancy between the way things appear and how they actually are. For instance, something may—in terms of how it appears—look good, but, due to its inner nature being different, it can turn bad once it is affected by conditions. Food that looks so good in a restaurant may not sit so well in your stomach. This is a clear sign of a discrepancy between appearance and reality.

These phenomena themselves are called conventional truths: they are known by consciousness that goes no further than appearances. But the same objects have an inner mode of being, called an ultimate truth, that allows for the changes brought about by conditions. A wise consciousness, not satisfied with mere appearances, analyzes to find whether objects inherently exist as they seem to do but discovers their absence of inherent existence. It finds an emptiness of inherent existence beyond appearances.

Meditation practice is a simple way of stepping out of the neurotic and chaotic aspects of the thought process. We can simplify everyday life, as well as bring simplicity to the sitting practice of meditation. Relating to both practice and daily life as fully as possible, being right on the dot in terms of technique, will bring us into an open situation where we don’t have to guard against anything or concentrate on anything, either. We find that the meditative aspect of the situation is there already.

I have observed a strange idea of love that many people seem to have: they see love as a kind of gift that has to be given back. Someone says, “I love you,” and, if the other person does not reply with an “I love you, too,” the first person gets upset. But love doesn’t always have to be reciprocated. We can just love. If love doesn’t come back to you, it is still love that you give and that you feel. We do not always have to look to get something back for what we give, do we?

~1. No one can judge on partial evidence. ²That is not judgment. ³It is merely an opinion based on ignorance and doubt. ⁴Its seeming certainty is but a cloak for the uncertainty it would conceal. ⁵It needs irrational defense because it is irrational. ⁶And its defense seems strong, convincing, and without a doubt because of all the doubting underneath.

~2. You do not seem to doubt the world you see. ²You do not really question what is shown you through the body’s eyes. ³Nor do you ask why you believe it, even though you learned a long while since your senses do deceive. ⁴That you believe them to the last detail which they report is even stranger, when you pause to recollect how frequently they have been faulty witnesses indeed! ⁵Why would you trust them so implicitly? ⁶Why but because of underlying doubt, which you would hide with show of certainty?

A Course In Miracles, Lesson 151

29 August 2021

~3. How can you judge? ²Your judgment rests upon the witness that your senses offer you. ³Yet witness never falser was than this. ⁴But how else do you judge the world you see? ⁵You place pathetic faith in what your eyes and ears report. ⁶You think your fingers touch reality, and close upon the truth. ⁷This is awareness that you understand, and think more real than what is witnessed to by the eternal Voice for God Himself.

~4. Can this be judgment? ²You have often been urged to refrain from judging, not because it is a right to be withheld from you. ³You cannot judge. ⁴You merely can believe the ego’s judgments, all of which are false. ⁵It guides your senses carefully, to prove how weak you are; how helpless and afraid, how apprehensive of just punishment, how black with sin, how wretched in your guilt.

A Course In Miracles, Lesson 151

~2. Whatever your appointed role may be, it was selected by the Voice for God, Whose function is to speak for you as well. ²Seeing your strengths exactly as they are, and equally aware of where they can be best
applied, for what, to whom and when, He chooses and accepts your part for you.

A Course In Miracles, Lesson 154

31 August 2021

~8. Would you receive the messages of God? ²For thus do you become His messenger. ³You are appointed now. ⁴And yet you wait to give the messages you have received. ⁵And so you do not know that they are yours, and do not recognize them. ⁶No one can receive and understand he has received until he gives. ⁷For in the giving is his own acceptance of what he received.

@brennebeanlf asks ‘How do you avoid existential dread?’

When I’m overwhelmed with existential thoughts and feelings that feel too big for my tiny little human ... head, I like to remind myself that it’s all just actually, like, none of my business. You know what I mean? Like, I’m here for the ride. I’m not here to learn, like, the physics and the mechanics behind the roller coaster, you know, like, that stuff is for nerds, no offence, but when it’s 3 a.m., and I’m sitting in bed, petrified and wide-eyed, thinking to myself, like, ‘What does it all mean?’, ‘What does it mean?’, or like, ‘What is my purpose?’ ‘What is my purpose???’ ‘WHAT’S MY PURPOSE?’ You know, I just remind myself that actually that’s none of my business, you know. We leave all of that stuff up to the big sexy mommies in the clouds, in the sky, you know, if there are any. If there are or aren’t, again, none of my business, you know.

It is proverbial that the troubles that worry us most are the ones we never have to meet. Countless people have been killed by misfortunes that never happened to them. This looks absurd on paper but it is tragically true in life. Of all the types of foolish people, Mr Atlas probably takes the palm. Not satisfied with his own many troubles (and Mr Atlas is certain to have a great many of his very own), he has to go about worrying over everybody else’s problems too. The Greeks pictured him carrying the whole world on his own shoulders, bowed down under the intolerable weight, and this is a splendid symbol of what many people are doing today. Mind your own business, Mr Atlas. Hoe your own row, scrub your own doorstep, and that will give you quite enough to do—if you do it properly. Do not try to carry the burdens of the whole world. Such a policy will destroy you and will not help the world. Leave something to God. After all, it is He who is responsible for the world, and not you. Has it ever occurred to you that if you had never been born, the world would have had to get along somehow, and that God would probably take care of everything quite well? To worry over conditions that you cannot change is gratuitous folly. To get and to keep your own peace of mind, to do your own duties well, and to see the Presence of God in all men and things, is the surest way both to help the world and to make your own life divinely successful too.

LET GOD HAVE YOUR BURDEN

Once you have contacted the Power within, and have allowed it to take over your responsibilities for you it will direct and govern all your affairs from the greatest to the least without mistakes. “The government shall be upon his shoulder.” You are tired, and driven, and worried, and weak and ill, and depressed, because you have been trying to carry the government upon your own shoulder, the burden is too much for you, and you have broken down under it. Now, immediately you hand over your self-government, that is, the burden of making a living, or of healing your body, or erasing your mistakes, to the Child, He, the Tireless One, the All-Powerful, the All-Wise, the All-Resourceful, assumes it with joy, and your difficulties have seen the beginning of the end

The poet Henley, in his challenging poem called Invictus, says: “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.”
The first thing I notice is that he speaks of “my fate,” “my soul”. If I have been behaving as though I were captain and master of anyone else, wouldn’t it be a good idea to turn my attention to managing myself?
I must also recognize, however, that my fate, and the state of my soul, doesn’t depend on me alone; I need the help of God to meet life’s challenges. No human wisdom is adequate to make life wholly satisfying and successful.

Is it not He Who knows the way to you? 2 You need not know the way to Him. 3 Your part is simply to allow all obstacles that you have interposed between the Son and God the Father to be quietly removed forever. 4 God will do His part in joyful and immediate response. 5 Ask and receive. 6 But do not make demands, nor point the road to God by which He should appear to you. 7 The way to reach Him is merely to let Him be. 8 For in that way is your reality proclaimed as well.

W-pI.189.9. And so today we do not choose the way in which we go to Him. 2 But we do choose to let Him come. 3 And with this choice we rest. 4 And in our quiet hearts and open minds, His Love will blaze its pathway of itself. 5 What has not been denied is surely there, if it be true and can be surely reached. 6 God knows His Son, and knows the way to him. 7 He does not need His Son to show Him how to find His way. 8 Through every opened door His Love shines outward from its home within, and lightens up the world in innocence.

W-pI.189.10. Father, we do not know the way to You. 2 But we have called, and You have answered us. 3 We will not interfere. 4 Salvation’s ways are not our own, for they belong to You. 5 And it is unto You we look for them. 6 Our hands are open to receive Your gifts. 7 We have no thoughts we think apart from You, and cherish no beliefs of what we are, or Who created us. 8 Yours is the way that we would find and follow. 9 And we ask but that Your Will, which is our own as well, be done in us and in the world, that it become a part of Heaven now. 10 Amen.

We must be present

This workbook cannot help those who are active in their addictions. We don’t know of any programme that can help these people. Perhaps it is as simple as this: When the time comes to face the healing process, these people avoid the process via their addiction. Common sense tells us we need to totally abstain while working on this healing process. The mind that made us sick cannot make us well in its present state nor under the influence of the addiction. We need something higher than us, different than us, other than us, which can and will do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. This is a mind training and spiritual awakening programme, so it is important to be consciously present.

W-pI.190.5. It is your thoughts alone that cause you pain. 2 Nothing external to your mind can hurt or injure you in anyway. 3 There is no cause beyond yourself that can reach down and bring oppression. 4 No one but yourself affects you. 5 There is nothing in the world that has the power to make you ill or sad, or weak or frail. 6 But it is you who have the power to dominate all things you see by merely recognizing what you are. 7 As you perceive the harmlessness in them, they will accept your holy will as theirs. 8 And what was seen as fearful now becomes a source of innocence and holiness.

If you have a horrible relationship history, and you see someone you find attractive, don’t even say hello. Talk to someone you don’t find attractive and see over time if you can build a relationship with them.

But we have indeed been given everything by God. Yet do we need forgiveness to perceive that this is so. Without its kindly light we grope in darkness, using reason but to justify our rage and our attack. Our understanding is so limited that what we think we understand is but confusion born of error. We are lost in mists of shifting dreams and fearful thoughts, our eyes shut tight against the light; our minds engaged in worshipping what is not there.

When you discover circumstances you do not like, say: ‘I did it. I must undo it. But I don’t know how I did it. Therefore I must surrender.’ You have not changed your mind if you are still trying to choose among illusions, by trying to understand based on past experience what the problem is and how to correct it. Every time you try to correct a problem based on a past experience you will recreate the problem. When you reach the limit you must say: ‘there must be a better way’.

A jailer is not free, for he is bound together with his prisoner. He must be sure that he does not escape, and so he spends his time in keeping watch on him. The bars that limit him become the world in which his jailer lives, along with him. And it is on his freedom that the way to liberty depends for both of them.

Therefore, hold no one prisoner. Release instead of bind, for thus are you made free. The way is simple. Every time you feel a stab of anger, realize you hold a sword above your head. And it will fall or be averted as you choose to be condemned or free. Thus does each one who seems to tempt you to be angry represent your savior from the prison house of death. And so you owe him thanks instead of pain.

Haven’t you got a bunch for scripts for everyone around you, who you’re getting upset about if they don’t follow them? That’s why you’re attracted to them. This person is doing the same thing to you. That’s why you’re with them. That’s why you can’t leave them. You’re just like them. If you’re in denial about your own ego, about your own selfishness, fear, or unconsciousness, then you have to deny it’s there, so you can see yourself as being a nice person, because everyone gives the appearance of being a nice person, and then you take the part of you that’s not such a nice person, and you project it onto the people around you, and then you see your own not-nice-person-ness in the people that you are close to, and the reason why you can’t get away from them is that they’re reflecting you back to you, and you know that.

In fact, I admitted that from then on I was willing to let God take over instead of me. Each day I would try to find out what His will was and try to follow that, rather than trying to get Him to always agree that the things I thought up for myself were the things best for me.

It can seem like you’re surrounded by people who are just the opposite of the way you think you are but you can’t get away from them for anything. Why? Because a part of you doesn’t want to get away from yourself. And, they’re also doing you the favour of mirroring back to you your own subconscious beliefs about yourself so you can be healed. So, if you see yourself as a nice person surrounded by people who have real issues, you have real issues, but you’re telling yourself that you don’t, because you’re nice, you’re the nice one. You’re so nice, your face is just wet with tears about all the injustices that people do to people who are nice. You’d be nice all the time, wouldn’t you, if they didn’t just make you have to want to get ‘em.’

Tony, of Romano Tours

People love us, but every so often, a customer leaves a review that they were disappointed or didn’t have as much fun as they thought. So, here at Romano Tours, we always remind our customers, if you’re sad now, you might still feel sad, there, OK? You understand? That make sense? Our tours will take you to the most beautiful places on earth. But remember, you’re still gonna be you on vacation. If you are sad where you are, and then you get on a plane to Italy, the you in Italy will be the same sad you from before, just in a new place. Does that make sense? There’s a lot a vacation can do. Help you unwind. See some different squirrels. But it cannot fix deeper issues. Like how you behave in group settings; your general baseline mood. That’s a job for incremental lifestyle changes sustained over time.

Tradition 12: And finally, we of Alcoholics Anonymous believe that the principle of anonymity has an immense spiritual significance. It reminds us that we are to place principles before personalities; that we are actually to practice a genuine humility. This to the end that our great blessings may never spoil us; that we shall forever live in thankful contemplation of Him who presides over us all.

The programme works because the principles work, not because we’re smart or special.
